A CV axle replacement becomes necessary when the driveshaft that sends power from your gearbox to your wheels starts to wear out or gets damaged. CV stands for constant velocity, and these axles use flexible joints that let your wheels turn and steer while still receiving power. If you drive around Northmead and have noticed a clicking sound when turning, or grease flung around the inside of a front wheel, the CV joints or their protective boots may be failing. Getting this looked at early usually means a simpler, less costly repair.

Because we’re a family-run workshop that focuses on European vehicles alongside everyday makes, we see plenty of CV axle wear across cars driven daily through the Parramatta corridor. Owner Sarkis has spent over a decade hands-on with driveline work, so we know how these parts fail and what to check first.

What Are the Warning Signs of a Failing CV Axle?

CV joints are hardy, but they rely on a small rubber sleeve called a boot to keep grease in and dirt out. Once that boot splits, the joint dries out and wears fast. Here are the signs that usually bring drivers in for a CV joint repair:

  • Clicking or popping when turning, especially at low speed in a car park or roundabout. This often points to a worn outer joint.
  • A clunk when accelerating or when shifting from drive to reverse, which can mean the inner joint has play in it.
  • Grease spray inside the wheel or on the underside, a telltale sign of a torn CV axle boot.
  • A vibration through the floor or steering that gets worse the faster you go.
  • A humming or grinding noise from the front once the joint has worn badly.

If you catch a split boot early, we can sometimes do a CV boot replacement and repack the joint before it’s damaged. Left too long, the whole CV shaft usually needs replacing.

What Happens During a CV Axle Replacement

We start by getting the car up on the hoist and checking both sides, because wear on one axle often means the other isn’t far behind. We inspect the boots for splits, feel each joint for play, and look for grease thrown around the arch. On a road test we listen for the clicking and clunking that tells us which joint is worn.

Once we’ve confirmed the fault, we walk you through what we’ve found before touching anything. If a full CV axle replacement is the right call, we remove the old shaft, fit the replacement, and torque the hub nut to the correct spec. We check the surrounding parts too, including the wheel bearing and gearbox seals, since a leaking seal can ruin a fresh axle. After fitting, we road test again to confirm the noise and vibration are gone.

For European makes like BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volkswagen, driveshaft fitment and torque specs can be fussy, and we match parts to the right specification for your car rather than fitting a rough approximation.

What Affects the Cost and Time of CV Joint Repair?

A few things change the size of the job:

  • Boot repair versus full axle. A CV boot replacement caught early costs far less than a complete CV shaft replacement.
  • One side or both. Replacing both axles takes longer but is often sensible if both show wear.
  • Vehicle type and drivetrain. Some front-wheel-drive layouts are quick; all-wheel-drive and certain European models take more labour.
  • Parts choice. We use quality parts backed by manufacturer warranty, and we’ll explain the options between OEM-spec and quality aftermarket so you can decide.

We won’t quote a figure blind. Once we’ve inspected the car and confirmed exactly what’s worn, we give you an honest price up front. No surprises, no pressure to replace parts that still have life in them.

Common Questions, Honest Answers

Browse the questions below for straightforward answers about our services. If you can't find what you're looking for, give us a call and we'll help.

The most common sign is a clicking or clunking noise that gets louder when you turn, especially at low speed. You might also feel vibration through the steering wheel or floor when accelerating. A torn or cracked CV boot, the rubber sleeve that protects the joint, is often spotted during a service before the joint itself fails. If you notice grease splattered around the inside of your wheel arch, that’s a strong indicator the boot has split and the joint is being exposed to dirt and moisture.

It’s not advisable. A CV joint that’s already clicking or worn can fail completely without much warning, which means you’d lose drive to that wheel while moving. At highway speed, that’s a serious safety risk. The longer a damaged joint runs unprotected, the faster it deteriorates. What might be a boot replacement early on can turn into a full axle replacement if left too long. If you’re hearing noise or feeling vibration through the steering, get it looked at sooner rather than later.

A CV boot replacement is done when the rubber sleeve has split or cracked but the joint inside is still in good condition. It’s a less involved job and keeps a serviceable joint going longer. A full axle or CV shaft replacement is needed when the joint itself is worn, corroded, or has been running without lubrication for too long. Our team inspects the joint during the boot check. If there’s already play or roughness in the joint, replacing just the boot won’t solve the noise or vibration.

We start by lifting the car and removing the wheel to access the axle shaft. The old shaft is unbolted from the hub and disconnected from the gearbox or differential. The replacement shaft, pre-packed with grease and fitted with new boots, is installed, torqued to the manufacturer’s specification, and the wheel is refitted. We then take the car for a short test drive to confirm the noise is gone and the joint moves smoothly through full steering lock. The whole process is typically completed within a few hours.

The cost depends on whether one or both axles need replacing, the make and model of your vehicle, and whether we’re replacing just the boot or the full shaft assembly. European vehicles sometimes require specific shaft assemblies that cost more than parts for common Japanese or Korean makes. We’ll give you a clear quote before any work begins, so there are no surprises on the invoice. You can book a free inspection and we’ll assess exactly what’s needed and explain your options.

For a single axle on most vehicles, the job is typically completed in one to two hours once the parts are on hand. If both axles need attention, allow a bit more time. We aim to have most CV axle work done same-day, though this depends on parts availability for your specific vehicle. When you book in, we can let you know what to expect based on your car’s make and model.

CV boots are made from rubber, and over time heat, cold, and general road exposure cause them to harden and crack. Once a boot splits, the grease inside the joint escapes and dirt and water get in, and that combination accelerates wear dramatically. Front-wheel-drive vehicles put more stress on CV joints because the axle has to both drive and steer the wheel simultaneously. High-mileage vehicles, cars driven on rough roads, and those with a history of misaligned wheels tend to see faster CV wear.

Under ACCC guidance, Australian consumer law generally allows you to have your car serviced and repaired by a qualified independent mechanic without voiding a manufacturer’s warranty, provided the work is done properly and appropriate parts are used. This is general information, so we recommend checking your specific warranty terms for your vehicle. At Star Mechanical Repairs in Northmead, we use quality replacement parts and document all work clearly, which supports your service records regardless of where your car was purchased.

CV boots are worth checking at every service, or at least annually. They don’t have a fixed replacement schedule the way brake pads or timing belts do, since they’re replaced when cracked, split, or showing signs of deterioration. Catching a damaged boot early is genuinely worthwhile; replacing a boot is a much simpler job than replacing the entire axle once the joint has worn. If your car hasn’t had its boots inspected in a while, it’s easy to include that check during a logbook service.

Yes, European vehicles are actually a strong suit of ours. BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volkswagen each have specific axle shaft designs, joint tolerances, and torque specifications that differ from mainstream vehicles. We work on these regularly at our Northmead workshop and source parts that meet manufacturer specifications. European axle assemblies can be more involved to replace, particularly on all-wheel-drive models, but our team is familiar with the common variants and knows what to look for during inspection.
